A Raspberry Pi would run Linux, using Samba, and wouldn't hold such information, and is under $50, so would be a cheap, small, and secure solution to using a network drive to launch games. Windows is not recommended because SMB v1, which the PS2 needs, has a vulnerability that exposes every file on your computer to outside access without credentials, full read/write access, which opens it up to malware being able to be installed, or files with personal information being able to be read, like your browser stored passwords and your TurboTax files. SMB is the Windows implementation, Samba is the Mac and Linux implementation. Samba/SMB is the folder sharing protocol OPL uses. It won't help for what you are doing.ĬogSwap and SwapMagic are methods of installing FMCB. It is to play physical discs, and it requires a case modification to be able to swap discs without tripping the sensors. Swap Magic is to boot the system, authenticate a disc, then swap in another without the console detecting the swap, to play burned or imported discs. However, a Raspberry Pi direct connected with ethernet to the PS2 can be a portable way to bring your games with you without having to carry a router. A router just connects multiple devices on one network to the internet or another network. Access it over network via a Samba or SMB share, like through a Raspberry Pi for better speed and compatibility.ĭoesn't matter, networking is networking. It has longer load times than optical disc, and has the most issues with compatibility. You then run it with uLaunchELF, or you add it in the FMCB configuration app to the main system menu.Įxternal USB hard drive is the absolute worst way to run PS2 games. Installing an app is usually just copying the ELF file to a USB drive or the memory card. uLaunchELF is included with FMCB installs and is your save file manager and file browser. Other devices do any useful functions better. The point of OPL and FMCB is to not use optical discs anymore. Why would you need Swap Magic on a card? Just buy the discs. PS1 games via POPStation, but it has compatibility issues, better to just use PS1 discs, or find another device that can emulate PS1 well enough, like a Raspberry Pi. Network Samba share if you can't do a hard drive is second best. OPL for PS2 backups, from internal hard drive is best. Sorry to be a bother guys but hoping you can lend a kind helping hand here! Are there any other useful programs you could suggest I try?Īlso some general directions on how to go about installing stuff onto the card would be appreciated to.How can I get swap magic onto the card?.What's the best method of running PS2 backups that you guys have found?.Having trouble finding guides or good information online, but maybe I suck at searching? The only one I am use is OPL with a external HDD to load backups. SMS (Simple Media System), uLaunchELF, ESR, HD Loader/HD advance, Usb Extreme, OPL So my card has Free McBoot 1.93 (Multi - Regional) and comes with the following programs/apps installed. I recently got a Free Mcboot memory card and I have a bunch of questions, hoping I can get some clear answers and maybe some help. I am kind of new to the PS2 modding scene.
